Leaders Integrity Forum: Working with integrity with Maori

Minimal and reasonable expectations for understanding Māori and their priorities, requires engagement at the beginning of the consultative process, with personal approaches made before more formal inputs.

Such expectations are a start on what is still a journey for Crown agencies as they move towards achieving meaningful partnerships with Māori.

Ethical leadership discussed at Leaders Integrity Forum

Culture and Conduct: Creating a culture of integrity and code of ethics, was the theme of the June 2019 Public Sector Leaders Integrity Forum. This was chaired by Debbie Francis who recently completed an independent external review of the workplace conduct of Parliament. She noted in her introduction that changing an established organisational culture is more powerful than strategy and more difficult to change.

Data Ethics was the topic of rich and well considered discussion at the public sector Leaders Integrity Forum held in March. It was co-hosted by Transparency International New Zealand (TINZ) and the Office of the Auditor General (OAG).

The session lived up to its name through the skilled chairing of Andrew Hampton (Director General of the Government Communications Security Bureau).

Public sector leaders discuss CPI issues

The Leaders Integrity Forum held on 14 February was focused on the 2018 Corruption Perceptions Index (TI-CPI).  The forum explored what this index tells us about the challenges and risks to democracy in our rapidly changing world and how public sector leaders can make a difference.

TINZ Chief Executive, Julie Haggie, provided an overview of New Zealand’s number-two standing within the Corruption Perceptions Index 2018.

The theme of the August Leaders Integrity Forum was the proposed reform of the State Sector Act (1988) but with a specific focus on ‘free and frank advice’. It was chaired by Don Hunn, senior diplomat and civil servant including the State Services Commissioner during the public sector reforms in the 1980s.
