At the end of July 2017, TINZ held a three-day meeting of Transparency International’s Asia Pacific chapters. TI’s Global Chair, José Ugaz was in attendance. He saw first-hand that corruption remains entrenched throughout many places in the Pacific. The following letter was sent to him by TI-PNG’s Chair, Lawrence Stephens.

TINZ hosts Asia Pacific Regional Meeting

13 July 2017

Transparency International New Zealand (TINZ) hosted a mid-year Asia Pacific Regional Meeting (APRM) from 28–30 July 2017 in Wellington for the Chapters of the region. As funding and unexpectedly stringent New Zealand visa requirements prohibited the attendance of representatives from Chapters such as Pakistan, the meeting was a “virtual one”, using digital technology.

After 12 years at the helm of Transparency International Papua New Guinea (TIPNG) as the Executive Director, Emily George Taule has stepped down for a well-earned break. One of the longest serving Executive Director’s in the movement, Emily has served TIPNG and the Transparency cause with much commitment, passion and inspiration.

Transparency International publishes Asia Pacific corruption poll

Many governments in Asia Pacific fail to stop corruption;
900 million people are paying bribes

From the media release, “Approximately 900 million — or just over one in four — people living in 16 countries in Asia Pacific, including some of its biggest economies, are estimated to have paid a bribe to access public services, according to a new public opinion poll from the anti-corruption movement Transparency International.”
