Constitutional support for public service

Former Prime Minister Sir Geoffrey Palmer, when speaking at the May TINZ board meeting, made a case that there has been an absence of free and frank advice offered to ministers in recent for public servants from total ministerial control.

Sir Geoffrey noted that If ministers do not receive free and frank advice, there is a real risk that this will promote a tendency to politicise the public service and endanger its independence, thereby adversely affecting the quality of advice given and decisions taken.

Former New Zealand Prime Minister Sir Geoffrey Palmer, spoke to the May Board meeting of Transparency International New Zealand (TINZ) about his project A Constitution for Aotearoa New Zealand.

A Constitution for Aotearoa New Zealand, jointly authored with Andrew Butler and launched in September 2016, is now in the second printing and available from Victoria University Press.

Bribery and corruption on the Auckland Council

Engineering consultancy company director, Stephen Borlase, and Rodney District Council Infrastructure ‘Director’ [Manager] Murray John Noone, have been found guilty of bribery under section 105 of crimes act, and will be sentenced in February.

The case has taken three years to come to court.
