TINZ is launching new research into access to environmental information in Fiji and Solomon Islands with an online Pacific talanoa to share findings, experiences and ideas for strengthening access across the region.
Across the Pacific decisions about land, oceans and natural resources have significant consequences for communities and future generations. But meaningful participation in those decisions depends on people being able to find, access, understand and use relevant information.
TINZ’s new research, Access to Environmental Information in Fiji and Solomon Islands, looks at how this works in practice.
The report will be launched on 28 September, the International Day for Universal Access to Information.
The research considers access to information on fisheries in Fiji, and mining in Solomon Islands. TINZ has also developed a Rapid Assessment Tool that provides a practical framework for assessing access to environmental information elsewhere in the Pacific and beyond.
Join the talanoa
TINZ is launching the report with an online Report Launch + Talanoa on Monday 28 September, bringing together the researchers and participants from across the Pacific.
Fiji researcher Alisi Rabukawaqa, Solomon Islands researcher Charley Piringi, and Research Lead Mark Christensen will discuss what the research found and what communities told them about accessing information on decisions affecting their land, ocean and natural resources.
The talanoa will invite participants to share experiences from across the Pacific: what is working, what gets in the way, and what could help communities obtain and use the information they need.
