Let the sun shine in

Our “Let the Sun Shine In” series will spotlight the urgent need for openness in political funding, lobbying, and disclosure ahead of this year’s general election. The campaign draws on recent research, advocacy and new content which warn that unchecked influence and opaque donations are eroding public trust in democratic decision‑making.

As New Zealand prepares to vote, the series will examine how money and access shape policy outcomes—from the absence of a public lobbying register to weak donation disclosure rules and the “revolving door” between government and lobbying roles.

We will also highlight the need for a public register of who controls companies and trusts - the beneficial owners.  There will be more in our next newsletter.

In this issue we drill down on two issues; political party funding - Let the sun shine in on political party funding - and political integrity - Let the sun shine in: A call for greater Integrity in politics.

We also are collaborating with the Health Coalition Aotearoa and the Helen Clark Foundation on the ‘Level the Lobbying Playing Field Campaign. Ultimately, the message of both campaigns is simple: sunlight is the best disinfectant.

Transparency International NZ invites citizens, journalists, and policymakers to join the conversation and demand stronger integrity safeguards. As the election approaches, the series will challenge all parties to commit to reforms that ensure decisions are made in the open, for the benefit of every New Zealander—not just those with wealth and access.
